Two groups get into confrontation at Everett's Horizon Elementary
EVERETT -- A teen was shot in the chest on a crowded school playground Tuesday evening after two groups of young people got into some sort of confrontation, Everett police reported.
The shooting happened about 6 p.m. on the sports courts at Horizon Elementary School along W. Casino Road in south Everett. The victim, 17, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with at least one gunshot wound to the chest, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said. He was listed in stable but critical condition Tuesday night.
Officers accompanied by a police dog, were searching the area, looking for the suspect and the firearm.
Police questioned several witnesses and detained two people at the scene, Goetz said. There was good information about the identity of the shooting suspect, he said.
The Major Crimes Unit was handling the investigation.
There was some sort of altercation between two groups of young people, and at least some suspected of being involved have gang affiliations, Goetz said.
"We don't know exactly what the conflict was about," he said.
There were many people outside the school enjoying the warm weather, including many children when the shots rang out.
